Lesnar remains champ

Living up to every ounce of hype prior to the bout, UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar survived an early onslaught to submit challenger Shane Carwin in the second round with an arm triangle choke. In the opening period Carwin dropped Lesnar with a blasting uppercut and quickly pounced on the champion. For the next three minutes Carwin controlled from the top position and bloodied the champion. In the second round, Lesnar took the tired challenger to the mat and sunk in a tight arm-triangle. The tap came at 2:19.

In what could go down as one of the greatest finishes of the decade Chris “The Crippler” Leben submitted Japanese sensation Yoshihiro Akiyama via a tight triangle with only :20 seconds remaining in the fight. At the time of the submission, Leben was considerably behind in the fight.

Welterweight veteran Chris Lytle submitted Matt Brown with a perfectly executed armbar at 2:02 of the second round.

TUF 1 veteran Stephan Bonnar was victorious in a 205 lb. rematch against Krzysztof Soszynski stopping his opponent at 3:08 of the second round with a vicious knee TKO.

Lightweight George Sotiropoulos defeated Kurt “Batman” Pelligrino via unanimous decision. Judges’ scorecards read 30-27 twice and 29-28.

Heavyweight Brendan Schaub stopped Chris Tuchscherer with one powerful right cross just 1:07 into the first period. Ricardo Romero submitted former Kimbo Slice conqueror Seth Petruzelli with a slick armbar at 3:05 of the second round. Former TUF 3 winner Kendall Grove defeated Goran Reljic via split decision. Scorecards read 29-28 twice and 30-27 in favor of Grove. Middleweight standout Gerald Harris closed the show against Dave Branch with a powerful slam KO in the third and final round. The fight was waved off at 2:35. Daniel Roberts was awarded a split decision over Forrest Petz. Scorecards all read 29-28, twice in favor of Roberts. Heavyweight Jon Madsen won a unanimous decision over Karlos Vemola. All three scorecards read 30-27.

UFC 117: SILVA vs. SONNEN

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns on Saturday, August 7th, and fight fans will be treated to a world championship showdown between middleweight title holder and pound for pound king Anderson “The Spider” Silva, and number one challenger Chael Sonnen. Also in action, welterweight contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago "Pitbull" Alves square off in their long-awaited rematch, and welterweight legend Matt Hughes takes on jiu-jitsu wizard Ricardo “Big Dog” Almeida.  UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen – Saturday, August 7th, live on Pay-Per-View from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA.

Full card set for for UFC 117

The middleweight title fight at UFC 117 between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen will be accentuated by one of the most stacked cards in UFC history. The main card features the long-awaited rematch between welterweight contenders Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves, as well as such notable fighters such as recent UFC Hall of Fame inductee Matt Hughes, the electrifying Clay Guida, and a heavyweight matchup between two fast rising stars in the division Roy Nelson and Junior Dos Santos. With all of the intriguing fights lined up on the fight card, the championship ramifications in the main event will add the icing to the cake.

The undercard bouts feature the following matchups: Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves, Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida, Clay Guida vs. Rafael Dos Anjos, Roy Nelson vs. Junior Dos Santos, Thiago Silva vs. Tim Boetsch, Dustin Hazelett vs. Rick Story, Stefan Struve vs. Christian Morecraft, Johny Hendricks vs. Charlie Brenneman, Ben Saunders vs. Dennis Hallman, and Rodney Wallace vs. Stanislav Nedkov.

UFC 117 is available live on Pay-Per-View at 10pm ET/7pm PT on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, BellTV, Shaw Communications, Sasktel, and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $44.99 US/$49.99 CAN for standard definition or high-definition broadcasts (where available).

The co-main event of UFC 117 will be a showdown to elevate one fighter to the top of contention for the welterweight championship. UFC veteran Jon Fitch (fighting out of San Jose, Calif./ profesional record – 25-3, 1 NC) has had a remarkable career in the organization. One of the division’s most consistent fighters, Fitch has won four fights in a row and has an overall record of 12-1 in the UFC. His lone loss came at the hands of welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre via unanimous decision at UFC 87. The durable fighter from Indiana wrestled collegiately at Purdue University and has the endurance to battle until the end. This decisive battle will be a long awaited rematch as Thiago “The Pitbull” Alves (fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla./22-5) aims to seek revenge on Fitch. The 26-year old fighter has elevated himself to the top of the division by winning nine of his last eleven fights in the UFC. Alves believes he has improved as a fighter more than Fitch has since their last fight in 2006, which he hopes will lead him to victory. The ramifications of this fight extend beyond a statistic on their career record.

The “swing” bout of the evening is an early favorite to garner Fight of the Night honors. The always-exciting Clay “The Carpenter” Guida (fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M. by way of Johnsburg, Ill./26-8) is renowned for his memorable battles in the Octagon. Coming off a submission victory over Shannon Gugerty, Guida has won four of his last six fights. The former collegiate wrestler is set to lock up with the winner of three fights in a row, Rafael Dos Anjos (fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/14-4). The Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion has entered the Octagon twice already in 2010, most recently for UFC 112 when he was able to submit Terry Etim with an armbar at the end of the second round. The young fighter has only had five fights in the UFC, but is steadily climbing the ladder in the lightweight division.

The context of the first welterweight matchup on the main card extends beyond a typical fight, as honor and history are on the line. Recent UFC Hall of Fame inductee Matt Hughes (fighting out of Hillsboro, Ill./45-7) is a legend of the UFC, with 22 fights and a UFC record 17 victories. The two-time UFC welterweight champion has defeated future champions in Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn, but in the context of this fight, Hughes has defeated Royce Gracie, Matt Serra and Renzo Gracie. Both Serra and Ricardo “Big Dog” Almeida (fighting out of Hamilton, N.J./12-3) are coached by the legendary Renzo Gracie, which sets up the opportunity for Almeida to defend the honor of the Gracie clan. Almeida is on a three fight win streak and a winner of five of his last seven. The four-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu National Champion not only has his own reputation to defend, but the reputation of an entire legendary MMA family.

The Ultimate Fighter® Heavyweights Finale winner Roy Nelson (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev./16-4) has only two UFC fights under his belt, but has scored a first-round knockout in both of them. A grappler with world-class experience and a black belt under Renzo Gracie, he has quickly elevated himself as a worthy heavyweight contender. His matchup with Junior Dos Santos (fighting out of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil/11-1) provides a glimpse into the exciting future of the heavyweight division. Dos Santos has been victorious in his five fights within the organization by way of four knockouts, and a submission victory over Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 103. The Brazilian native’s boxing and jiu-jitsu background have helped establish Dos Santos as a legitimate contender for the heavyweight title.

Thiago Silva (fighting out of Sao Paulo, Brazil/14-2) started his UFC career with a bang, winning his first four fights (three by TKO), dating back to UFC 71 in 2007. He has since battled the elite fighters in the light heavyweight division, including former champions Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans. His latest opponent, Tim “The Barbarian” Boetsch (fighting out of Lincolnville, Maine/11-3), makes a return to the UFC after a short hiatus. Previously, Boetsch had four fights in the UFC, establishing a record of 2-2.

Of the five victories that Dustin Hazelett (fighting out of Cincinnati, Ohio/14-5) has obtained in the UFC, four have come via submission. The submission specialist has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and hopes to secure a win over Rick Story (fighting out of Vancouver, Wash./10-3).The young fighter out of Washington has been on a roll lately, winning his last three fights. Story’s supreme conditioning is exemplified by the fact three of his four fights have gone all three rounds.

In one of the tallest matchups in recent UFC history, the 6’11” Stefan Struve (fighting out of Beverwijk, Netherlands/23-4) is set to face the 6’5 ½ Christian Morecraft (fighting out of Plymouth, Mass./6-0). Known for his height and length, the 22-year-old Struve has utilized his skills in kickboxing and submissions to secure three wins in his five fights in the UFC. Morecraft is making his UFC debut after establishing a solid professional record.

Two-time NCAA Division I national wrestling champion Johny Hendricks (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev./8-0) has split time between the UFC and World Extreme Cagefighting®(WEC®). After winning his first two fights in the WEC, Hendricks made a smooth transition to the UFC and continued his winning ways through his first three fights. His opponent, Charlie Brenneman (fighting out of Whippany, N.J. by way of Hollidaysburg, Pa./12-1), improved his already solid professional record after winning his UFC debut against Jason High last March at UFC Fight Night Live®. Also a former Division I wrestler, this matchup could very well be decided on the ground.

Welterweight striker Ben Saunders (fighting out of Orlando, Fla./8-2-2) has been successful in his UFC career thus far. The aggressive fighter has won four of his six fights, and is the only man to knock out veteran contender Marcus Davis. Although Saunders has had a relatively short fighting career, his opponent Dennis Hallman (fighting out of Yelm, Wash./64-13-2, 1 NC) has had 80 professional fights. Hallman made a return to the UFC at The Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights Finale in December of 2009 after a four year hiatus. The gritty fighter has the experience and knowledge required to secure a longer stay in the UFC.

The opening fight for UFC 117 features two up-and-coming light heavyweights. Rodney Wallace (fighting out of Charlotte, N.C./9-2) made his debut against Brian Stann at The Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights Finale and has since fought Jared Hamman at UFC 111. On August 7th, Wallace is seeking his first victory in the UFC against Stanislav Nedkov (fighting out of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria/11-0). Nedkov is an impressive light heavyweight fighter with a background in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, who is making his UFC debut at UFC 117.

Sonnen Confident for Silva Showdown

For one of the biggest underdogs in recent memory, Chael Sonnen is brimming with confidence.

Why? He is a notoriously gritty wrestler familiar with the standing outside of the limelight, and with the biggest fight of his career on August 7th against pound-for-pound great Anderson Silva the Oregon-based middleweight is all smiles. A shot at the world middleweight championship is something that most men could only dream of; never one for subtlety, Sonnen wears his heart on his sleeves.

"I could pull Anderson Silva out of his hotel room any night and beat the crap out of him, but I made a commitment to wait until August 7th to do that."
Sonnen, a long time MMA veteran with a wealth of experience, has always risen to the occasion. While he was generally regarded as a sturdy journeyman for most of his career, recent victories over former WEC titlist Paulo Filho and number one contender Nate Marquardt have boosted Sonnen’s confidence exponentially.

"I'm the toughest guy in the company,” boasted Sonnen. “There has never been a guy with earrings that can out-tough me and he's not gonna be the first."
Although he is considered to be widely overmatched by most pundits for his showdown with Silva at UFC 117, Sonnen has not held back on criticizing Silva. Whether speaking about his fashion-sense or history as champion, the media-savvy Sonnen has held nothing back.
"I've never had a problem with what he does in the cage,” Sonnen explained. “I don't believe in sportsmanship and honor. It's a fight. I just don't like him. I don't have to have a reason, not everybody can like everybody. I'm going to got out there and take his belt on (August) 7th and Dana's gonna fire him on the 8th."

A would-be politician in his home state of Oregon and former NCAA All-American wrestler, Sonnen is not ashamed of his popularity among fight fans. He is also not hesitant to speak to the quality of his opponent’s fans.
"I don't think Anderson has any fans. He's the only guy in the world that has been a champion for 4 years and only has one sponsor. Nobody wants to associate themselves with him. Nobody wants to dress like him or be like him. I, on the other hand, have numerous sponsors who do very well. That should tell you all you need to know about his popularity."
Whether it is as world middleweight champion or simply as former challenger, Chael Sonnen is always looking ahead. The real question becomes whether or not it’s inside the Octagon.
"I make all my comments with my political future in mind. I received 96.3 percent of the vote. I'm wildly popular."

Cruz vs. Benavidez

“WEC 50: Cruz Vs. Benavidez”, live this Wednesday night, August 18th on Versus at
9 P.M. ET/ 6 P.M. PT.

Cruz-Benavidez Bantamweight Rematch Headlines WEC 50 on Versus Wednesday Night
If you’re looking for some fast-paced, high octane MMA action this week, look no further than World Extreme Cagefighting’s offering of “WEC 50: Cruz Vs. Benavidez”, live this Wednesday night, August 18th on Versus at 9 P.M. ET/ 6 P.M. PT. from the Pearl at Palms Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

World Extreme Cagefighting is a Mixed Martial Arts organization that focuses on lighter weight classes, has been viewed by some as a training ground for fighters looking to earn a spot in the UFC since Zuffa, LLC, which owns the Ultimate Fighting Championship took control of the WEC in 2006.

However, with a national television deal to broadcast live shows on Versus, the WEC continues to develop a strong following among MMA fans. The organization looks to build upon its success with the action-packed excitement of “WEC 50: Cruz Vs. Benavidez” Wednesday night.

The main event will feature a highly anticipated rematch between current WEC Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, who sports a record of 15-1, defending his belt against 12-1 Joseph Benavidez.

The two fighters first met on August 9, 2009 at “WEC: Torres Vs. Bowles” when the 25-year-old Cruz handed the 26-year-old Benavidez the first loss of his career via unanimous decision. Cruz then went on to win the Bantamweight on March 6, 2010, scoring a major upset victory over former champion Brian Bowles.

Cruz used an attack comprised of quality punching power, and vicious leg kicks to wear Bowles down. Cruz would win the fight via TKO stoppage by the referee, as Bowles suffered a broken hand during the bout, giving Cruz his first world title.

On the same night, Joseph Benavidez put forth an impressive showing in his victory over Angel Torres, winning by a choke submission in the second round. Benavidez used his excellent speed and conditioning to push past Torres, and move into the number one contender position for the Bantamweight title.

Benavidez is primed and ready to get some payback on the man who ended his undefeated streak. “I’m very excited to have my first title shot be against the guy who gave me my only loss,” Benavidez says. “The fact that I get to do both in one night is a dream come true.”

Since that crushing defeat, Benavidez has drastically altered his training and overall mental approach to fighting. He admits he has become more focused on the technical aspects of his preparation. “I had a much different philosophy about training [before losing],” Benavidez said.

“I wouldn’t study any tape and thought I could just beat people with my instincts.” The 26-year-old now prepares specifically for each opponent and looks for weaknesses to exploit. “I’m doing everything different now,” he says. “You can see the difference in my last two fights, which I feel were my most impressive. I became a different fighter.”
Cruz, who started his career by winning nine consecutive bouts as a featherweight, dropped down from 145 pounds to 135 pounds, after losing to Urijah Faber in March 2007, knows he must be ready for Benavidez revamped fighting style this time around.

“What I see this time around is Benavidez not underestimating me,” Cruz says. “When we first fought he assumed I couldn’t wrestle at his caliber and I wasn’t as athletic as him. It was kind of foolish and I think that’s why I won the fight. I’m sure he will be more than ready for me this time.”

Cruz, also readily admits he has taken a more unconventional approach towards developing his fighting style. I kind of pieced [my style] together,” Cruz says. “I didn’t start out boxing or kickboxing. My striking came from a wrestling base. You can’t call it anything but MMA fighting.”

But Benavidez knows he must focus on employing his strategy, and not worry about Cruz’ unpredictability inside the cage. “I can’t think too much about what Cruz may do,” the former high school wrestling champion says. “He’s already a confusing fighter. He’s a freaking jigsaw puzzle that moves around like nobody else,” said Benavidez. “
Whatever happens in Wednesday night’s main event, both men is guarantee that this rematch should be the best fight on the card. “It will definitely be the fight of the night,” Benavidez says. “Neither of us have ever been in a boring fight, and we’ll be coming out with new tricks.”

At least Cruz can agree with his opponent on this issue. “If it goes five rounds there’s just no way we won’t win the award; I can almost guarantee it. The fans are in for a treat whether the fight ends early or goes the distance.”

Other fights scheduled to be televised on Versus during “WEC 50: Cruz Vs. Benavidez”:

Lightweight (155LBS.) Bart Palaszewski (33-13) Vs. Zack Micklewright (9-1)

Bantamweight (135 LBS). Scott Jorgensen (10-3) Vs. Brad Pickett (20-4)

Featherweight (145LBS) Cub Swanson (14-3) and Chad Mendes (7-0)

Lightweight bout: Shane Roller(8-2) Vs. Anthony Pettis 8-1)

*Featherweight (145 LBS) Fredson Paixao (9-3; 1NC) Vs. Bryan Caraway (14-4)

*Lightweight (155 LBS) Danny Castillo (8-3) Vs. Dustin Poirier (0-0)

*-Bouts may not be televised

Saturday, August 28 The Broadcast Will Begin at 7 P.M. PT 10 P.M. ET on Pay-Per-View

UFC Lightweight Championship
Frankie Edgar vs. B.J. Penn

Co-Main Event
Randy Couture vs. James Toney

After a back-and-forth instant classic at UFC® 112 in April, which saw Frankie Edgar shock the mixed martial arts world and take the UFC lightweight strap from around BJ Penn’s waist, the two will square off again live from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

Also on this card, it’s The UFC versus Boxing as Randy “The Natural” Couture takes on boxing legend James “Lights Out” Toney as Toney makes his mixed martial arts debut. Plus Rousimar Palhares takes on Nate Marquardt, and Gray Maynard and Kenny Florian battle for the next top lightweight contender spot.

The Undercard

Former Sportfight welterweight champion Mike Pierce will meet Brazilian import Amilcar Alves  in a preliminary matchup at UFC 118 “Edgar vs. Penn 2” on Aug. 28 at the TD Garden in Boston. The UFC has finalized a 10-bout lineup for the event, which will air live on pay-per-view.

The underrated Pierce has won seven of his past eight fights, losing only to the world-ranked Jon Fitch. The 29-year-old last appeared in March, when he defeated Julio Paulino by unanimous decision at UFC Live 1 in Broomfield, Colo. Victories against International Fight League veteran Mike Dolce, former World Extreme Cagefighting welterweight title contender Brock Larson and two-time collegiate All-American wrestler Paul Bradley highlight Pierce’s resume. Based in Portland, Ore., the ground-and-pound specialist has secured more than half (seven) of his 12 career wins by knockout or technical knockout.

The once-beaten Alves will carry an eight-fight winning streak into his Octagon debut and has finished four consecutive opponents inside one-round. A black belt in judo, he trains out of the same Nova Uniao camp that produced reigning WEC featherweight king Jose Aldo. Alves, 25, has not competed since December, when he knocked out Fernando Paulon -- the only man to defeat him -- with a first-round knee at Platinum Fight Brazil 2. The bout lasted just 59 seconds.

An anticipated rematch between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and the man he dethroned, B.J. Penn, will headline UFC 118, along with a heavyweight matchup between UFC hall of famer Randy Couture and professional boxer turned mixed martial artist James Toney. The event will also feature a middleweight showdown pairing former title contender Demian Maia with Mario Miranda, a welterweight tilt pitting “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 winner Nate Diaz against Marcus Davis and a duel between world-ranked lightweights Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard.

Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard
Demian Maia vs. Mario Miranda
Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis
Joe Lauzon vs. Gabe Ruediger
Andre Winner vs. Nik Lentz
Dan Miller vs. John Salter
Nick Osipczak vs. Greg Soto
Mike Pierce vs. Amilcar Alves

Hopkins says Toney is in trouble at UFC 118

Much of the boxing world is still pretty down on the skills of mixed martial artists. Not Bernard Hopkins. The light heavyweight great was one of the first guys to admit he'd get whupped in the Octagon fighting under MMA rules. The 45-year-old legend is fearful that James Toney has bitten off more than he can chew in his fight against Randy Couture.

"I think James Toney is going to get his ass kicked. James Toney is out of his league," Hopkins recently told Mauro Ranallo on Sirius' Hardcore Sports Radio (Audio). "I believe and I'll go on record with this, the best MMA guy or UFC guy goes up against the boxer in the world, in their arena ... gets their ass kicked. I don't care if it's Floyd [Mayweather], [Manny] Pacquiao or Bernard Hopkins. It's not what we do."

In just over two weeks, Toney is making his MMA debut at UFC 118. Couture is a former UFC champ in two weight divisions with 28 professional MMA fights under his belt. After 83 pro boxing fights, Toney, 41, is trying MMA.

Boxing heavyweight champ David Haye expanded on what he also believes is a mismatch. He told Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole:

"Six months of training isn’t going to be enough." Haye said. "As a UFC fan, I know two or three years wouldn’t be enough. How many times has Toney sprawled in his life? 500? How many leg kicks has he taken in his life? 300? How many Kimura attempts has he defended? 140? Even if he’s done double that amount, he wouldn’t have nearly the experience needed to win a UFC fight."

Hopkins also added that if UFC champ Anderson Silva tried to straight up box against an elite boxer, he'd struggle as well.

"This is a different arena. I'm not saying he won't have his moments," said Hopkins. "Listen, when that instinct comes in. When one guy is used to taking a guy down, using his forearm or chin or whatever and you take that away, it's like taking his teeth out of his mouth. He's no longer a lion."
