Skip Raps on Wraps

A No Particular Order Production

1) Remember the wrist.

I've seen too many kids and other people new to the sport wrap their hands so they look like their wearing mittens Grandma gave them. Yeah, you got to protect the knuckles, but your wrists are going to take some punishment too. Wrap'em.

2) Wrap right, but not too tight.

The hand wrap is here to help you - in boxing, your equipment is your team. If you wrap your hands too loose you might break a knuckle or a finger. Having broken several digits in my lifetime, I can speak from experience and say this is highly unrecommended and not fun. But your hands aren't hostages, either. Don't wrap them so tight that you can't feel them.

3) Get the long ones.

The short ones are good for tying things to the roof of the car, tying up your girlfriend (*only if she's into it) and make decent dog toys. But if you're wrapping your hands for boxing, get the long ones.

4) Wash the F'n Things

That's right. I said it. Get a linen bag and wash your f'n wraps once every week or two so the rest of us at the gym don't have suffer with your ungodly stench.

5) Keep The Wraps Wrapped

Or you'll be the tool at the gym with contending with ribbons of tangled wraps and looking like a douche bag who doesn't take care of his equipment.

Great notes, Skip. I know you've had some knuckle problems in the past (right?). How are you getting along?

Let me just disagree with #4 here, though. I avoided putting them through the washer because I'm cheap frugal poor thrifty too busy to buy new wraps all the time, and I figured the washing and detergent and drying would wear out the elastic (I use "Mexican style") quicker.
In my experience, anyway, I've found that just hanging wraps up to dry keeps them from getting rank. As long as they don't sit in my bag or on the floor somewhere in damp wad, they're all right. I hang them over the door for a couple of days, roll them back up, and move on. Maybe this is one of those things that's individual, though, and I'm just naturally sweet-smelling.  Grin

Then perhaps your nom de guerre when you go pro could be "Damp Wad" or "Da Funky Lump." Actually, I think James Brown recorded a song by the name of the latter sometime in the early '70s. Don't use that one

haha - nice one, Paul

I've been washing wraps with other gym laundry for years in a linen bag - it's not been detrimental.

My hands have been pain free for ages now - at long last I realized they were killing me as a result of doing push-ups on fists - it was resulting in major tendon pain in my ring fingers. All good now though.
